Sophomore Tom Sippie won the 400-meter race in the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field National Championship on March 15 in Lincoln, Neb. His was the first indoor national championship for the Hornets since 2001.
Sippie crossed the finish line seven one-hundredths of a second faster on Saturday than he did on Friday, finishing in a time of 47.86. The mark is a new record for Sippie and the LC track and field team.
On Friday, Sippie, of Toms River, N.J., set his personal and school record en route to the top qualifying time. In the finals on Saturday, he ran in the second section. None of the times in the first section, including one by fellow Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) competitor Alexander Tallman (Washington and Lee University, were within a tenth of a second of Sippie’s Friday time.
