Dr. Charlotte Guynes, professor of health promotion, received the College/University Health Education Professional of the Year Award from the Southern District AAHPERD (American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance), which covers 17 states from Texas to Virginia.
The award honors a college/university professional in health education employed within the southern district states with five years of experience at the college/university level. The winner must be an AAHPERD member for a minimum of three years and must demonstrate three out of four of the specific contributions criteria:
- Position of leadership in developing and implementing or directing/coordinating effective health education/promotion programs
- Meritorious service through involvement at local, state, district, or national level or at the school or community level
- Service within an AAHPERD health structure or other health professional organizations at the state, district, or national level as an officer or committee member
- Evidence of leadership and service to the profession through three of the following: teaching, publications, presentations, funded research or programs, special projects, or health-related activities.
Dr. Guynes has been teaching in health education for 38 years. Her classes incorporate as much hands-on learning as possible. Dr. Guynes’ areas of professional interest and research include sleep disorders, caffeine, bone density disorders, HIV/AIDS, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and child/family violence.
Dr. Guynes has served on more than 50 committees/councils and has been a member of a number of boards including VAHPERD, Planned Approach to Community Health, Family Resources Network, and the School Health Advisory Board for Lynchburg City Schools.
Dr. Julius Sigler ’62, vice president and dean of academic affairs at LC, said, “Her collegiality, her can-do attitude, her work in the classroom, her professionalism, and her quiet but highly effective administrative skills make her a most valuable member of our community.
