Five senior Westover Honors Fellows presented their thesis research at the spring 2013 Virginia Collegiate Honors Council Conference held on the campus of Northern Virginia Community College, Annandale, April 12-13.
More than 100 students from 19 institutions across Virginia participated in the conference. Organized as a professional research conference and competitive in nature, the students participated in individual sessions over the course of two days as they were evaluated by panels of three judges in each of their separate sections.
Two Westover Fellows earned honors and a cash prize for their presentations. They were:
Kenley Hoover, “Contemporary Text and Evolving Genre: A Critical Analysis of First-Person Shooter Genre Innovation in the Video Game Bioshock”; and
Kelsey Shelton, “Gender Differences in Lifting Technique.”
Kenley’s Westover project was directed by Dr. Michael Robinson, associate professor of communication studies; while Kelsey’s was overseen by Dr. Diane Wrisely, associate professor of physical therapy.
The other participants were:
Abigail Burnette, “Terrorism and Drug Prices: Does a Drug-Terror Nexus Exist?”;
Orry Hatcher, “The Ideological Realignment of the Southern States”; and
Brynn Workman, “The Effects of Convective Cooling on Aerobic Performance.”
Dr. Edward DeClair, associate professor of political science and director of the Westover Honors Program, and Dr. Katherine Gray, associate professor of English, accompanied the students to the conference. Dr. Gray was elected to the VCHC Executive Board for the 2013-2014 academic year and will serve as the faculty representative for four-year private institutions.
