Fourteen first-year students will spend Aug. 16-20 paddling along the Chesapeake Bay and Virginia coasts and camping at Kiptopeke State Park as an introduction to college and LC’s Outdoor Leadership Program.
Students will learn how to use stand-up paddle boards and kayaks and do yoga — including laughter yoga. The first-year ABOVE (Above and Beyond Orientation Values Experiences) program was established by Paul Stern, coordinator of LC’s Outdoor Leadership Program, to help first-year students with the transition to college life. Students get to know other people and make friends before their first semester gets under way.
“We believe the challenges associated with wilderness adventures provide a unique classroom for teaching and developing the judgment, self-confidence, and social skills critical to a successful first year in college,” Stern said.
