Picturing Wonderland: Sir John Tenniel’s Illustrations for the Alice Books
Sir John Tenniel’s illustrations for Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass give form and detail to the worlds that Lewis Carroll created with his words. Perhaps no other set of illustrations complements its text as brilliantly: the richly imagined drawings combine amusing fantasy with a sober realism that matches the story’s matter-of-fact account of impossible events. This exhibit presents nineteen of Tenniel’s engaging and memorable drawings, accompanied by relevant passages from Carroll’s two books. Guest Curator: Richard C. Burke, John Franklin East Distinguished Professor of Humanities, Professor of English. Daura Gallery through October 17.

Pierre Daura: Tools of the Artist
Pierre Daura taught studio art at University of Lynchburg (1945-1946) and Randolph-Macon Woman’s College (1946-1953). This exhibit, curated by museum studies students Maggie Dakin ’12 and Kelsey Reed ’12, includes the tools Daura used in his painting, printmaking, and sculpture. Daura Gallery through December 9.
Social Criticism: The Prints of William Hogarth
Exhibition includes engravings from the series Industry and Idleness (1747; reprinted from the original plates 1840) that illustrate the progression in the lives of two apprentices – one dedicated and hardworking, the other idle. Daura Gallery through December 9.
The Red Coats are Coming! Historic Costume Design by Gibb Zea
During the spring 2012 semester, museum studies minor Gibb Zea ’13 undertook an independent study to replicate 18th-century-style garments, such as the red coat worn by Samuel Adams in his 1772 portrait by John Singleton Copley. The project included research of styles, materials and construction, pattern-making, and hand-sewing using authentic materials and tools of a period tailor. Daura Gallery through October 17.
3-D Art of Sculpture and Design Students
