Dr. Woody McKenzie, associate professor of human development and learning in the School of Education, has been awarded a Mednick Memorial Fellowship for 2012.
Dr. McKenzie will serve as a consultant to improve science education on the island of St. Lucia in the Caribbean.
A partnership between LC and St. Lucia, which began in 2003, provides St. Lucia teachers with opportunities to expand their knowledge and training both on the island and at LC. To date, St. Lucian students have earned 11 bachelor’s and 13 master’s at LC in the field of special education, and another 25 master’s in counseling were awarded in St. Lucia. Currently, six students from St. Lucia are enrolled in LC graduate programs.
The Maurice L. Mednick Memorial was created in 1967 in honor of a young Norfolk industrialist who died from accidental causes. The Mednick Memorial Fund is administered by the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges (VFIC) to encourage the professional development of college teachers and improve their academic competence through fellowships for research and advanced study.
Founded in 1952, the VFIC is a nonprofit fund-raising partnership supporting the programs and students of 15 leading private colleges in the commonwealth.
