For the third straight season, the lady Hornets advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament with a 16-3-3 record.
Freshman midfielder Shelley Hoath (Alexandria, VA/Mount Vernon) scored 24 minutes into the game Saturday and the defense made the lead stand up as the University of Lynchburg women’s soccer team defeated Washington & Lee University 2-0 in the second round of the 2009 NCAA Tournament. The Hornets advance into the Sweet 16 of the tourney.
Shelley Hoath scored the game winner at 23:47 of the first half on an assist from junior forward Betsy Kwiatkowski (Mount Jackson, VA/Stonewall Jackson). LC had a 6-0 edge in shots at intermission and took the 1-0 lead into halftime. Senior midfielder Ashley Hoath (Alexandria, VA/Mount Vernon) added an unassisted insurance goal at 62:09 to complete the scoring.
Junior keeper Anna Wright (Ashland, VA/Patrick Henry) made two saves to earn her 10thshutout of the season. Lynchburg out shot Washington & Lee 10-4, but the Generals held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
