A 5k run/walk around the University of Lynchburg Dell on Sunday, Nov. 15 will benefit The City of Joy, a center for women seeking refuge in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and local organizations working with women who have been victims of abuse.
Participants will be given the option of carrying a jerry can on their heads, as women in Africa do. This is often a time when they are most vulnerable to attack.
The walk is sponsored by Students Taking Action Now for Darfur (STAND). Registration will begin in front of Hopwood Hall at 11 a.m. Participants will have time to visit informational tables about each of the organizations benefiting from the proceeds. The walk will begin at noon.
Participants do not have to complete the entire 5k to win prizes. For each lap a participant walks/runs, he or she will be given a raffle ticket for a $25 gift certificate to six local businesses: White Hart, Waterstone, Starlight Cafe, Bittersweet, Speaker Tree, and Little Dickens.
A DJ will provide music. T-shirts and food are free. The cost to register is $5 for students and $10 for non-students. For more information, contact Carolyn Walsh at 508-397-0680 or walsh_c@students.lynchburg.edu.
