The Speical Olympics Regional Area 24 Track and Field Event will be hosted by University of Lynchburg on Saturday, April 16. Athletes from Bedford, Lynchburg, Campbell County, Nelson County, Central Virginia Training Center, Danville, and Farmville are participating.
The parade of athletes begins at 9:15 a.m. Miss Lynchburg will sing the National Anthem for the opening ceremony at 9:30 p.m. The Olympics will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Shellenberger Field. The rain location is Wake Field House.
LC received a $1,880 grant from the NCAA for its Special Olympics events this year. The grant was used to purchase games for the Olympic Village, which includes tents, and a banner saying, “University of Lynchburg is all about Respect.”
LC will be giving away t-shirts with the same logo, and three scholarships will be awarded to three Special Olympians to attend the State Special Olympics.
Each year the event has 75-130 participants plus their coaches, family members, and more than 100 volunteers from University of Lynchburg.
