Men’s cross country coach Doug Thomasey ’05 was named the Coach of the Year in the South/Southeast Region recently by the U. S. Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
This was the second year in a row that Thomasey has been named regional coach of the year. He has also won the ODAC Coach of the Year award in back-to-back seasons.
This was Thomasey’s second season as head coach. Lynchburg defeated Guilford College by one point, to win the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) championship, which the Hornets hosted at Claytor Nature Study Center on a course that Thomasey created almost single-handedly.
After winning the ODAC championship for the fourth consecutive year, Lynchburg headed to Seguin, Texas for the South/Southeast Regional Championship, where the Hornets took the championship by one point, defeating Centre College. This was the Hornets’ second consecutive regional championship, and four runners earned all-region honors for finishing in the top 30.
With the championship, Lynchburg qualified for its third-straight NCAA National Meet appearance. Lynchburg finished 32nd in the tough national meet in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, to conclude its season.
