Clark Professor of History at the University of Kentucky and the author of several books, including “Railroads, Reconstruction, and the Gospel of Prosperity: Aid Under the Radical Republicans, 1865-1877,” and “Party Games: Getting, Keeping, and Using Power in Gilded Age Politics.”
