Eating Disorder Awareness Week

nichole johnsLC will focus on eating disorders throughout the week of Feb. 3-7, culminating in a lecture, “It's Not Just About Weight: The Complexity of Eating Disorders” by Nicole Johns on Friday from 10 a.m. to noon in Memorial Ballroom, Hall Campus Center, followed by a book signing.

Johns’ first book, Purge: Rehab Diaries (2009), was nominated for ForeWord Magazine’s Book of the Year Award. Johns has also published poems in numerous literary magazines including, The Evening Street Review, Ellipsis, and Lake Effect. She has been in recovery from an eating disorder since 2005.

Johns is originally from rural western Pennsylvania, but currently resides in the Twin Cities of Minnesota. She received her MFA in creative writing from the University of Minnesota and BA in English/creative writing from Penn-State Erie, The Behrend  College.

Eating disorders:

  • Typically occur between the ages of 18 and 21 years
  • Have increased among college students (10-20 percent for females, 4-10 percent for males)
  • Have the highest mortality rate of any mental disorder
  • Require early detection, intervention, and treatment for successful recovery
