Award-winning children’s author and parenting expert Julia Cook will give the Rosel Schewel Lecture in Education and Human Diversity at 7:30 p.m. March 21 in Memorial Ballroom.
Her talk, “In order to teach children, you must enter their view of the world,” is free and open to the public with a book signing following. Check out this story in The News & Advance.
Cook and her publisher, the National Center for Youth Issues, recently donated autographed copies of her book, Grief is Like a Snowflake, to each family affected by the Sandy Hook tragedy, as well as a case of books with accompanying activity books to all of the Newtown, Conn., schools.
The Schewel Lecture is one of several events planned during Cook’s visit to Lynchburg March 19-22. She will speak to hundreds of children, parents, educators, and others who work with children.
Cook’s books have dealt with a variety of tough issues that children are faced with today – bullying, anxiety, anger management, and divorce. Her recent releases include Cell Phoney, dealing with cell phone addiction and etiquette, and Smarter than the Scoopers, which teaches kids in a non-threatening way how to be safe from predators.
Cook has presented in more than 700 schools across the country and regularly delivers keynote addresses at national education and counseling conferences. The goal behind her 41 published children’s books is to actively involve young people in fun and creative stories and teach them to become lifelong problem solvers.
Cook’s books have been referenced in such publications as Parent’s Magazine, The New Yorker, The Chicago Tribune, Yahoo.com, dr.laura.com and babyzone.com has. She has also been featured on CNN’s HLN News, and several large metropolitan networks. For more information, go to www.juliacookonline.com.
