Reporting Academic Misconduct
Faculty members who believe a student may have committed an academic integrity violation have several options for addressing the alleged misconduct. Those options are outlined in the Academic Integrity section of the Honor Code. Faculty members are encouraged to call the Office of the Dean of Students at 434.544.8226 to consult with Carole Furter, associate dean of students, about addressing alleged violations.
One option available to faculty for addressing suspected academic misconduct is to refer the matter to the Office of the Dean of Students for review as a possible Honor Code violation.
To make such a referral, complete the Faculty Referral - Academic Integrity Violation form (MS Word doc) and deliver it to Carole Furter, associate dean of students (544.8226; 113 Hundley Hall; email@example.com).
Along with this form, please submit the following documents, if relevant to the incident:
- A copy of the work found to be problematic
- Any supporting documents (e.g., "cheat sheet," the original source articles from which an essay was plagiarized, etc.)
- A copy of the syllabus section(s) relevant to the case (e.g., reference to the Honor Code, explanation that group work is prohibited, instructions not to use Internet resources, etc.)
- Any other documents needed for a third party to have a full understanding of the reported incident
Participating in a Judicial Board Hearing
Faculty members may be asked to participate in judicial board hearings as witnesses, character references, or as hearing advisors. If you have been asked to participate, the following links may provide helpful information for you. Please do not hesitate to call the Office of the Dean of Students at 434.544.8226 if you have additional questions.
