When writing a paper, think of your audience. For whom are you writing? What type of audience do you have? After you figure out your audience, follow the rules below that might apply:
- Stay away from jargon
Jargon is language used by members of a trade, profession, or group in which only the members will understand.
- Avoid pretentious language and euphemisms
Do not try to use big words to "decorate" your paper; often it will sound ridiculous.
- When writing a paper, avoid slang, regional expressions, and nonstandard English.
Make sure your ESL student understands the English language and basic grammar before he or she starts using "street" language.
