Rockbridge County artists examined in student-curated exhibition
The work of four artists with Rockbridge County ties are coming together in a new, student-curated exhibition at the University of Lynchburg. “The Rockbridge Group: Masters Along the Maury” opens with a reception at 4 p.m. Monday, April 22, at the Daura Gallery in the university’s Dillard Fine Arts Center. It will remain on view until May 17. The exhibition includes the art of Pierre Daura, Jean Hélion, Sally Mann, and Cy Twombly and explores how life, landscapes, and people in Rockbridge County shaped their art.

Dr. Barbara Rothermel, director of Lynchburg’s Daura Gallery, recently returned from China, where she spent two weeks at Shanghai Jiao Tong University presenting professional development workshops on behalf of University Museums and Collections (UMAC), a committee of the International Council of Museums (ICOM).

Students engage in hands-on Civil War history project
Several Lynchburg College students are going beyond the history books to create a digital exhibition that will preserve documents for Historic Sandusky. The collection includes letters and diaries from a local Civil War-era family that have never been studied before. “You always hear about the battles and the big-name generals, but to read the letters and diaries of regular people who were actually there, and to see photographs that connect a face to their words, really makes it come alive.”

History professor accepted into Holocaust Museum seminar
Dr. Brian Crim, a Lynchburg College history professor, has been accepted into a competitive faculty seminar that will explore ways that teachers can incorporate “the extraordinary wealth of diaries, memoirs, and other textual and audiovisual sources that represent Jewish perspectives” into lessons about the Holocaust. The program will inform his teaching of a Holocaust history course at LC.
