LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) — On Saturday, May 27, the University of Lynchburg baseball team made history by defeating Shenandoah University 3-1 in the NCAA Division III Super Regionals. This is also the first time in school history that the University of Lynchburg baseball program will play in the DIII National Baseball Championship in Iowa.

The Hornets were able to rally back in the 8th inning to capture their first NCAA Super Regional title. For University of Lynchburg head baseball coach Lucas Jones, this win is for all the teams that helped build the program into what it is today.

“For our program certainly where we’ve come from six years ago when I took the job to building the culture and getting the right players in here and the guys that bought in. Maybe we didn’t see the success early on the field this is for all of them. The guys that helped build this thing the guys that helped build this foundation and certainly being able to get the guys in here that can play at the next level it’s just been a huge progression in the last couple of years for our program.”

Next the University of Lynchburg baseball team heads to Cedar Rapids for the NCAA Division III national championship beginning June 2.
