During a Town Hall Wednesday night at the University of Lynchburg officials provided an update on plans for the College Lake Dam Removal and Restoration project.

Talk of removing the dam came after the torrential downpours that led to flash flooding all around the Lynchburg area in August of 2018 and nearly caused the dam to fail.

Erin Hawkins, the water quality manager with Lynchburg Water Resources says after years of planning, they're ready to get started.

"This time period, in between, has really given us a chance to...To breathe, to understand, to develop a solid plan for the removal of the dam," Hawkins said.

They're set to get underway in January of 2024 and the project is expected to be completed in December of 2025.

The city says construction trucks may cause some delays on Lakeside Drive, but the traffic patterns aren't set to change.
