NELSON COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Nelson County Public Schools is welcoming a new eagle to join them as the Assistant Principal and ESOL Coordinator of Rockfish River Elementary School.

Mrs. Colby Tomlin Lopez graduated from Nelson County High School and received her degree in Modern Languages with a concentration in Teaching English as a second language from Longwood University. She then went on to obtain her master’s degree in Administration and Supervision Prek-12 from the University of Lynchburg.

Lopez kicked off her career with Nelson County Public Schools 15 years ago as a Second Language teacher. For the past two years, she served as the ESOL Coordinator.

While diving into these roles, she has provided and coordinated specialized instructions to develop the English Learners’ social, instructional, and academic proficiency in English. This development was to help prepare students to succeed in the general education program.

Now, Lopez is taking her talents to the Eagles. She says she is motivated to continue to support students, teachers, and families.

“My experiences teaching in Nelson County and most recently serving as a division-level coordinator and administrative aide have prepared me for the transition to the position of Assistant Principal,” said Lopez. “I truly believe in the Vision and Mission of Nelson County Public Schools, and the drive to create lifelong learners who contribute to society. As a lifelong citizen of Nelson County, I am deeply invested in the betterment of our schools and students.”

Lopez’s family roots are grounded in Nelson County. She lives in the community with her family and says she is excited to continue to build relationships with students and families in the Rockfish community.

“The Rockfish community looks forward to the positive influence and fresh perspectives that Mrs. Lopez will bring, further enhancing the educational experience for all students,” said Rockfish River Elementary School Principal, Jody Coffey.

Lopez’s new position as Assistant Principal/ ESOL Coordinator went into effect on July 3.
