Four Lynchburg citizens honored at Humanitarian Awards for work in the community

Four Lynchburg residents were honored Wednesday night during the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities' Humanitarian Awards banquet.

According to the center, these four citizens work behind the scenes to make the Lynchburg community a better place.

The Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities honored the four following residents:

  • Dr. James Camm, founder of One Community, One Voice
  • Dr. Gene Erb, a pioneer for the Free Clinic
  • Heather McCormick, a longtime educator at E.C. Glass High School dedicated to VCIC's mission
  • Sandy Kanehl, CEO of Roads to Recovery

Sandy Kanehl said she was honored to be on the first few VCIC honorees that work with substance abuse.

"I'm really grateful that the VCIC is actually shining a light on the need for inclusion for people with substance abuse disorders," Kanehl said.

ABC13's very own Noreen Turyn had the honor of emceeing the awards banquet Wednesday night. The anchor has done so for about 20 years.
