Appomattox's Dr. Annette Bennett named Region 8 Superintendent of the Year

Dr. Annette A. Bennett, Superintendent of Appomattox County Public Schools, was named Region 8 Superintendent of the Year. The announcement was made by Region 8 Chairman, Dr. Chip Jones at the region’s monthly meeting on Feb. 21.

Dr. Bennett’s dedication to children is evidenced by her service of 39 years in public education. After graduating from James Madison University (’85), she began her career as a special education teacher in Campbell County. She earned a master's degree from Lynchburg College (‘89) in Supervision and Instruction, and moved to Appomattox County Public Schools (ACPS) in 1991 where she has served as an assistant principal, principal, Director of Remedial and Special Education, and Director of Curriculum and Instruction.

As evidence of her commitment to life-long learning, she returned to school later in life to earn a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2017 and has been serving Appomattox as the Division Superintendent since 2018.

In each of these roles, Dr. Bennett’s commitment to high expectations for students and staff has yielded Appomattox recognition at the state and national level. Dr. Bennett attributes the success of the division to the collaborative efforts of a very talented team of teachers and administrators who put students’ needs first.

Bennett said, “Appomattox is a special place to live and learn. It is such an honor and privilege to have been a part of this team for so long.”

As the Region 8 Superintendent of the Year, Dr. Bennett will be eligible for the Virginia Superintendent of the Year Award to be presented in April by the Virginia Association of School Superintendents.
