Dr. Ashley Peele of the Conservation Management Institute at Virginia Tech will present “Connecting Bird Conservation in North America and the Neotropics” for at University of Lynchburg Science Gang talk.
Migratory species are faced with the unique challenge of surviving conditions in northern breeding grounds, southern wintering habitats, and all points along their migrations routes. To better understand their life history and how conservation efforts can mitigate the challenges they face, researchers must study migrants throughout the annual cycle. In this program, Dr. Peele will discuss her graduate work on population regulation of a migratory species in Jamaica during the non-breeding season and her current work on better understanding the population status of all bird species breeding in Virginia. Additionally, she will discuss the role of citizen science in large-scale conservation efforts, including her breeding season work in Virginia.
