Dr. Charles Knapp provide a personal, first-hand perspective on the life and legacy of Desmond Doss — the famed WWII medic who received the Congressional Medal of Honor and whose story was told in the 2016 film “Hacksaw Ridge.” Dr. Knapp knew Doss and is now the volunteer chairman of the Desmond Doss Council. His appearance at University of Lynchburg on April 16 will be the first public address he has given in Doss’s hometown.
While “Hacksaw Ridge” was being filmed in Australia, Dr. Knapp was able to visit the movie set as representative of the Doss Council. He had numerous conversations with Mel Gibson, director; Bill Mechanic, producer; and many key members of the cast, including Andrew Garfield who portrayed Doss. He has some fascinating behind-the-scenes stories about his interaction with those involved in the production of the movie.
