The University of Lynchburg has received an estate gift from Ann Montgomery Moses ’51 in the amount of $118,955. The gift was designated to the Riley B. and Kate Walker Montgomery Scholarship Fund, established in 2004 by Moses and her brother, Dr. C. Hunter Montgomery ’47.
The scholarship fund was created “to honor the memory of their parents and to perpetuate the Montgomery family’s interest in and support of the College” and “provides general support to students with demonstrated financial need and academic promise.”
Moses’s father, Dr. Riley B. Montgomery, was Lynchburg College’s fifth president and a member of the Class of 1919. He served as president from 1936-49. Montgomery Hall, a first-year residence hall commonly referred to as “Mont,” was named for him.
His wife, Kate Walker Montgomery, was a member of Lynchburg’s Class of 1920.
Moses, who died in May, had a bachelor’s degree in education from Lynchburg College. She grew up in Lynchburg, graduated from E.C. Glass High School, and was an elementary school teacher.
She served on Lynchburg’s alumni board from 1971-74 and again from 1998-2001. In 1999, she received a Distinguished Alumni Award from the College.
Gene Frantz ’71, ’76 MEd, former vice president for external affairs at Lynchburg, remembers Moses as a “very generous and caring person” who “always had a smile on her face.” As an alumna, he said, she was active in the Pioneer Club — predecessor of the Westover Alumni Society — and often attended class reunions and Richmond-area alumni events.
“She was a terrific person, always interested in the College and always upbeat,” Frantz said.
The Office of Financial Aid awards funds and scholarships based on fund criteria. You do not need to apply separately for this or any other scholarships when applying for admission to the University of Lynchburg.
