An exhibition of artwork by Elena Peteva, “Of Ash and Light,” opens Thursday, Aug. 29, at the University of Lynchburg’s Daura Museum of Art.
An opening reception will be held from 4–6 p.m. and Peteva will give an artist’s talk at 5 p.m. Refreshments will be served. Admission is free and the public is invited.
According to the artist’s statement, the exhibition “explores individual, social, and global states through allegorical representation. Subject and material become metaphor, creating a net of meaning — a charcoal drawing of hands about to reach into a dark tangle or an installation of a mound of ash.”
Peteva further described the installation as “a distilled representation that goes beyond the surface and invites the viewer to slow down, look closer, and reflect.”
Brooke Marcy, the Daura’s director, said she hope’s Peteva’s work will “encourage students from all disciplines to engage with the installation in multiple ways. This includes examining the surface, exploring the content, and creating connections on different levels.”
She added, “For our art students, Elena’s exceptional work will serve as inspiration and present new technical and conceptual challenges. This semester, we are excited to share Elena’s exhibition with our University of Lynchburg community and the larger Lynchburg community.”
The exhibition closes on Friday, Oct. 25.
Throughout the academic year, the Daura Museum of Art welcomes visitors from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. The museum is closed on weekends and during holidays and University breaks. Admission is free.
