Sara Escobar ’24 MSAT has received a grant to help fund research she conducted over the past year, “Impact Mitigation Properties of Youth and Adult Ice Hockey Helmets.”
Her research, conducted in collaboration with Liberty University and the University of Southern Mississippi, was funded in part by a $1,000 District 3 Master’s Research Grant from the National Athletic Trainers’ Association.
“Sara received $1,000 to compensate her for time spent collecting data,” said Dr. Tom Bowman, professor of athletic training at Lynchburg. “I received a faculty development grant several years ago to purchase all the helmets we tested.
“We collaborated with two researchers over at Liberty in the Center for Engineering Research & Education, where she learned how to use a drop tower to collect her data.
“We also collaborated with a colleague at Southern Mississippi who assisted with the study design and interpretation of the results.”
Escobar’s research will be recognized at the NATA Clinical Symposium & AT Expo, held June 25-28 in New Orleans, Louisiana. There, she will receive a Free Communications Award in the pre-professional/professional student category.
She also will present her research at the conference.
