Dr. Deborah Tannen, a bestselling author and Georgetown University professor, will deliver the 2019 Turner Lecture in the Humanities on Wednesday, November 20, at 6 p.m. in the Memorial Ballroom, Hall Campus Center.
Tannen is known for her expertise in interpersonal communication. Her speech will center on the differences in women’s and men’s communication patterns as they interact with each other, friends and family, at home and in the classroom, in on-screen conversations, and in face-to-face discussions.
Dr. Adam Dean, the John M. Turner Chair in the Humanities, said Tannen’s talk will shed light on how gender informs conversations from the classroom to high-level leadership positions. “Conversations about gender are everywhere in contemporary society, from the 2020 election to sports,” he said. “Hearing insight from a world-famous academic and popular author will help students better understand how gender shapes many aspects of life.”
Deborah Tannen is the author of “You Just Don’t Understand: Women and Men in Conversation,” which spent nearly four years on the New York Times bestseller list, including eight months in the number one spot. She also wrote “You’re wearing THAT?: Understanding Mothers and Daughters in Conversation,” and “You Were Always Mom’s Favorite!:Sisters in Conversation Throughout Their Lives.” She has been featured on Oprah, The Colbert Report, 20/20, and NPR’s Morning Edition. Tannen has also written for The New York Times, The Atlantic, Newsweek, TIME, USA Today, and many other major news outlets.
