University of Lynchburg will celebrate student achievement in the 20th annual Student Scholar Showcase on Wednesday, April 5.
The showcase shines a light on the excellent academic work performed by students throughout the campus, regardless of topic or discipline. The event will feature 65 poster presentations and 73 oral presentations of research in different locations. Topics include modernism, public policy, European responses to the Syrian refugee crisis, racial diversity of Virginia Sheriff’s offices, and the way privilege affects microaggressions.
This year’s showcase includes a keynote speaker, Brooke Thompson ’17, the 2016-2017 Sommerville Scholar. Brooke will present her research on the impact that Prozac, one of the most commonly prescribed antidepressants, has on learning and memory in fish. “Since there was not too much research on this topic, I thought that it would be an interesting subject to investigate,” said Brooke, who is majoring in biomedical science and psychology.
Brooke will present at 1:15 p.m. in Sydnor Performance Hall. She feels honored to be the keynote speaker. “It feels incredibly weird, yet gratifying, that I have been bestowed this honor, because I still see myself as a graduating senior with much to learn,” she said. “I think that anyone presenting could fill this position and deliver a superb presentation. That’s the joy of University of Lynchburg.”
Dr. Bianca Sumutka, chair of the Student Scholar Showcase committee, said it is exciting to see students from almost every major on campus making a presentation. “It is important to celebrate student research because it allows the campus community to see the wide variety of questions that students are pursuing outside of the classroom,” she said. “Our students are doing exciting work and enhancing their understanding of various disciplines through these projects. On April 5 we will all get a chance to see how students are taking the ideas that they are learning within the classroom and extending these ideas through their research.”
The showcase oral presentations will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 5 in several Schewel Hall locations: the Sydnor performance hall and rooms 208, 232, and 231. The poster presentation session will be held in the second and third floor lobbies of the Drysdale Student Center from noon to 1 p.m.
The schedule of presentations can be read below.
