College students from three states are gathering at University of Lynchburg this weekend for a competition featuring debate, public speaking, and more.
LC is hosting the Collegiate Forensic Association Southern Excursion, which begins Friday at 3 p.m. On both Friday and Saturday, students will participate in competitions for parliamentary debate — featuring discussions of contemporary political issues and world events — as well as impromptu speaking, prose interpretation, poetry interpretation, and speech recitation.
Colleges participating include University of Lynchburg, Liberty University, Randolph Macon College, Richmond University, Hampton University, Lord Fairfax Community College, Whytheville Community College, University of North Carolina–Charlotte, and Davis & Elkins College.
Events will be held in Schewel Hall, Hopwood Hall, and Hobbs-Sigler Hall. Each day, a detailed schedule indicating which events will be held in each area will be posted outside Schewel 231.
University of Lynchburg’s debate and forensics team has earned awards and many tournaments over the past two years. In November, the team won five awards at a tournament held at Randolph-Macon College, including a first-place prize in single dramatic interpretation won by Chelsea Fix ’19.
