Dennis Sullivan ’97 recently appeared in a story by the Capital Gazette, which explored his philosophy as an excellent teacher in one of Ann Arundel County’s toughest schools.
The story published last weekend revealed that the neediest sMaryland county’s schools with the most challenges, such as student poverty, also have the least experienced teachers. Dennis stood out for his long tenure and excellent performance at North County High School. He has taught government and geography there for 13 years.
“Not everyone can teach in … the more challenging schools,” he said in a video accompanying the story. “You’ve got to come with love.”
Laughter helps, too, he added. “If you never laugh and you take yourself too seriously, you will never last a day in this profession.”

At Lynchburg, Dennis majored in marketing and played lacrosse.
