Dr. Edward Polloway and Dr. Jacqueline Lubin ’07, ’08 MEd, ’16 EdD have published research in the Fall 2016 edition of Learning Disabilities: A Contemporary Journal.
Published in late October, the fall issue includes eight articles about a variety of methods for teaching people with learning disabilities. The article by Dr. Lubin and Dr. Polloway, “Mnemonic Instruction in Science and Social Studies for Students with Learning Problems: A Review,” describes how teachers can use mnemonic devices — such as acronymns, keywords, and pictographics — to help students learn difficult concepts. In addition to explaining basic examples of the use of mnemonics, it reviews decades’ worth of research about the effectiveness of mnemonic devices in science and social studies.
