A hockey fan since childhood, Cassie Phillips ’13, did a summer internship with the Washington Capitals in their promotions department. Cassie lives in Ashburn, Va., and was able to commute to her internship in Arlington.
Cassie (at right in photo) was tasked with researching to see what other National Hockey League teams were doing for promotions, particularly via social media. She also worked many events for the Kids Club, including movie night, free skates, and the prospect camp.
“I also got to go on a lot of appearances with Slapshot (the team mascot),” Cassie said. She helped create a skit on anti-bullying that Slapshot put on in a variety of venues. Cassie said she also created a Pinterest page for Club Scarlet, the first women’s hockey fan club.
A sport management major, Cassie earned six credits for her internship. She received three other internship hours with Adidas the summer after her junior year. She worked as an assistant to the Adidas Golf Virginia sales representative and traveled to different golf course pro shops in Northern Virginia. She sold products, took refill orders, organized new displays, and did inventory.
Cassie has a minor in public relations/journalism and is spending her senior year as copy desk chief for The Critograph, the student newspaper.
A pitcher for LC’s softball team, Cassie said she was recruited to LC by Coach Dawn Simmons. She has always loved sports so her major and the internship were a perfect fit. She has already been offered a chance to work for the Washington Capitals during winter break and she hopes that it may lead to a job offer. “If I could get started with the Caps, I would love that,” she said.
