LC students, faculty, and staff contributed 70,648 hours to a variety of volunteer efforts during the 2011-12 academic year.
The University of Lynchburg Emergency Medical Service (LCEMS) contributed the lion’s share with 28,080 hours of community service. LCEMS is a Virginia state-certified emergency health care service that provides Basic Life Support to anyone on College property, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, during the fall and spring semesters. With more than 25 active members including 13 Emergency Technicians (EMT), LCEMS answers more than 160 calls each year.
The Bonner Leaders, a volunteer leadership program supported by the Corella and Bertram F. Bonner Foundation, contributed 11,447 hours. At LC, Bonner Leaders spend two to three years in the program, working with community members on issues including education, hunger and homelessness, environment, and youth development.
Following close behind, Greek organizations donated 11,360 hours of volunteer work. There are ten fraternities and sororities at LC.
In addition to generously donating their time to a variety of causes, the LC community raised more than $70,000 during the 2011-12 academic year. The biggest fundraiser was Relay for Life, which netted nearly $32,000 for the American Cancer Society.
Other fundraisers included $17,673 for the Muscular Dystrophy (MS) Walk; $14,699 for United Way; and $9,950 for St. Baldrick’s Foundation, which supports research for childhood cancer.
