During the Super Bowl, student and staff volunteers scoured the campus, including residence halls, houses, and the dining hall, and collected more than $600 in donations to benefit a school in Haiti.
The donations will benefit LC’s partnership school, the Matenwa Community Learning Center www.matenwaclc.org. Although Matenwa is on the island of Lagonav and not on Haiti-proper, the quake still had an impact. The center is holding preschool through ninth grade classes in the courtyards and around the outside of the building, whose central pillars were damaged.
More significantly, said LC Associate Chaplain Anne Gibbons, the village is being inundated with people who have fled Port-au-Prince so the need is greater than ever.
LC students have now issued a challenge to all faculty and staff to meet or exceed their donations. To donate, checks may be made out to “LC – Haiti” and sent to the Chaplain’s Office or spare change may be left at the following campus locations throughout the week of February 8-12:
Dean of Students Office – Hundley Hall
Turner Gym – Kelly Gunter’s Office
Carnegie – Office #212 Julie Williams
Physical Plant – Main Office
Alumni Office – Emma Hensley
Hall Campus Center – Safety, Security, and Information Desk
