Dr. John D. (Dan) Johnson III, Medical Director

Dan JohnsonDr. John D. (Dan) Johnson III serves as the medical director of the Department of Physician Assistant Medicine. Dr. Johnson began working with the program in October of 2012 to enable the proposed program, and ultimately the clinical placements of the program, to be connected to the broader medical community. While serving in this part-time position, he also continues to serve as a practicing physician and director of ED Midlevel Provider Services at Centra Emergency Services.

Dr. Johnson received his bachelor’s degree from Virginia Tech and obtained his designation as physician’s assistant from George Washington University. He attended medical school at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his internship and residency at the Lynchburg Family Medicine Residency Program (affiliated University of Virginia). During his senior year, he served as chief resident.

After completing his residency, he joined Lynchburg Emergency Physicians in 1998 and remains a member of Centra Emergency Physicians.  He is a diplomat with the American Board of Family Medicine and a member of the American Academy of Family Medicine.  He is also registered as a certified Medical Review Officer (MRO).

His clinical interests include occupational medicine, depression and suicidality.

His publications include Contemplating Suicide, A Physicians’ Guide to Dealing with the Suicidal Patient. Resident and Family Physician, 2005.

He lives in Lynchburg with his wife Kathy and daughter Katie.
