You may qualify for enrollment at the Intermediate (201) level:
- If you enter University of Lynchburg directly from high school, and
- If you have had two years of Latin in high school
However, unless you have earned college transfer or AP credit, you will be required to take a placement test to determine the level at which you should succeed when entering the Elementary II (102) and Intermediate language levels.
The test is available online in Moodle, through Academic Advising. If you do not take the placement test before registering, you will be automatically enrolled in Elementary Latin I (101).
The Latin placement test is divided into 2 parts:
- Part 1: Measures knowledge of Latin grammar
- Part 2: Tests ability to read and translate simple Latin sentences
You may use a dictionary for the translation. After the test has been completed, it is graded by the Latin instructor. You will be notified by email of your score and the level of Latin in which you should enroll.
To receive a waiver from Latin 201 a student must score at least 60% on a test comparable to the final examination in Latin 201, Intermediate Latin I, which includes translation of unadapted classical Latin, reading comprehension and grammar, composition, and culture. The examination is proctored at University of Lynchburg and scored by the Latin instructor. Students who wish to take an examination to see if they might place out of Latin 201 should contact Dr. Elza Tiner, Professor of Latin & English. Note: the Latin placement test, which serves as a preliminary guide for initial enrollment in the Latin program, may not be used for waivers of Latin 201.
