Sara Bennett, PhD
Assistant Professor Finance
Dr. Bennett earned a PhD in finance from Kent State University, an MBA from Augusta University, and a BBA with a concentration in accounting from Augusta University. Prior to coming to University of Lynchburg in 2011, Dr. Bennett taught at Cleveland State University and Kent State University. She also worked as a Financial Analyst at Club Car, a division of Ingersoll Rand. She has published in Applied Economics; Journal of Business, Economics, and Finance; and International Journal of Educational Management. Her research interests include: international financial development, corporate financial management, corporate governance, financial derivatives, and personal finance. Dr. Bennett’s teaching interests include corporate finance, investments, and derivatives.
Francis Bush, PhD
Professor of Accounting
Dr. Bush earned a PhD in Business Administration from the University of Florida, a Master of Accountancy from The Ohio State University, and a BA in Mathematics from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Dr. Bush’s teaching areas include financial statement analysis, accounting information systems, financial accounting, cost/managerial accounting, industrial accounting, statistics, and cultural diversity.
Michael Craig, PhD
Assistant Professor of Economics
Dr. Craig earned a PhD in Economics and an MA in Economics from the University of Tennessee and a BA in Economics from Winthrop University. Dr. Craig’s teaching and research interests include development economics, public economics, and environmental economics. He is also interested in the regional impacts of labor shocks in resource extraction sectors.
Atul Gupta, PhD
Professor of Management
Dr. Gupta earned a BE degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Delhi, India, an MBA in Operations Management from the University of Northern Iowa, and a DBA with a major in Operations Management and a minor in Computer Information Systems from Cleveland State University. Prior to coming to University of Lynchburg in 1997, Dr. Gupta taught at Richard Stockton College of New Jersey and Cleveland State University. His teaching activities include developing innovative and quality teaching materials that enhance the learning process. Dr. Gupta’s scholarly productivity has been disseminated through publication in reputed academic journals and professional conference proceedings and presentations. Much of his research focuses on improving the efficiency and effectiveness of manufacturing and service operations. He is the Editor of International Journal of Business & Economics and Oxford Journal. He is also the Program Chair for Global Conference on Business & Economics.
Eric Kyper, PhD
Associate Professor of Management (MIS)
Dr. Eric Kyper received his bachelor’s and MBA from the University of Minnesota Duluth. He started his career as an information systems consultant specializing in database and systems design for custom business applications. While in his doctoral studies at the University of Rhode Island he shifted focus from database design to data mining and business intelligence applications. Along those lines Dr. Kyper has published articles on those topics and continues to consult in the areas of data mining, business intelligence, and quantitative analysis. He teaches in the areas of information systems and statistics.
David Murphy, PhD, CPA, CGFRM
Professor of Accounting and Economic Crime, Chair of Department of Accounting
Dr. Murphy received his PhD in Accounting from Washington State University in 1989. Prior to coming to University of Lynchburg, he served as Department Head and taught accounting courses at Sultan Qaboos University in Oman. He has also taught at Central Washington University, Oklahoma State University, California State University and the University of Idaho. His primary teaching interests are financial accounting, information systems and personal financial planning. His secondary teaching interests are international and managerial accounting. Dr. Murphy has developed and directed graduate programs in accounting in Bolivia, Peru, and the United States. He is the author of numerous papers which have been published in academic and professional journals in the United States, Europe and South America and is the co-author of an accounting textbook. Dr. Murphy also served for two years as the academic director of a U.S. AID-funded anti-corruption graduate program in Bolivia, and then as the accounting reform adviser to the Minister of Finance in Kyrgyzstan and then as Chief-of Party for the U.S. AID Accounting Reform Project in Uzbekistan and regional director of education. He spent a year in Peru as the senior anti-corruption adviser to the Controller General of Peru and most recently he has consulted as the anti-corruption adviser to the government of Bulgaria.
Maria Nathan, PhD
Professor of Management Business Administration
Dr. Maria Nathan received her PhD in Business Administration from the University of Southern California in 1992. Previous to joining University of Lynchburg, she has taught at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and University of California-Los Angeles. Currently, Dr. Nathan also teaches graduate classes in international business, management, global policy and strategy, and strategic human resource management in Europe and Asia. Dr. Nathan has received awards in recent years for her research, and has published in the Academyof Management Review and the Academyof Management Executive, among others. She is on five editorial review boards. Dr. Nathan is currently the coordinator for the School’s Business Administration program.
Stefan Nicovich, PhD
Associate Professor of Marketing, Chair of Marketing Program
Dr. Nicovich received his PhD in Marketing from The University of Memphis in 1999. He also received a Master’s Degree in Marketing from Memphis State University. Prior to joining the University of Lynchburg faculty, he taught at The University of New Hampshire and the University of Memphis. His main research interests concern the effect of new communication forms on consumers. He investigates the psychological impact of artificial environments on consumers in terms of their attitudinal responses and subsequent behaviors associated with their experiences. He has taught courses in Consumer Behavior, Advertising, Principles of Marketing and E-Commerce. He has a number of refereed publications in first, second, and third-tier journals, including the Journal of Business and Economic Studies, The Journal of Interactive Advertising, The Journal of Computer Mediated Communications, Information Resources Management Journal, and The Journal of Interactive Marketing. He has also received funding from Bethesda Corp for his work on Presence in Mediated Environments.
Gerald Prante, PhD
Assistant Professor of Economics
Dr. Prante received his PhD in Economics from George Mason University. He received his MS in Economics and Finance and his BA in Political Science from the Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville. Prior to joining University of Lynchburg, Gerald worked on tax policy issues in Washington, DC as an economist at the Tax Foundation and then Ernst & Young. His policy work has been featured in major news publications such as the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and The Economist, among others. Gerald has also appeared on C-SPAN’s Washington Journal program, CNN, CNBC, Fox News and other television and radio programs. Dr. Prante’s primary research interests involve the economics of government fiscal policies (taxes and spending).
Lee Schimmoeller, PhD
Director of the MBA Program
Associate Professor of Management and Business Administration
Dr. Schimmoeller earned his PhD from Nova Southeastern University, his MBA from Oakland University, and his BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Dayton. He worked in industry for 20 years as a design engineer, mechanical engineering master, and manufacturing engineering manager. He has taught at several area colleges, and has been at University of Lynchburg since fall 2005. His teaching areas include international business, management, and leadership.
