On March 24, 2022, the College of Education, Leadership Studies, and Counseling at the University of Lynchburg presented their Rosel Schewel Lecture Series featuring the author of The 1619 Project Nikole Hannah-Jones. Her lecture drew an audience that encompassed both the university and surrounding communities.

Since her time on our campus, we have heard requests from the community to continue the conversation. Thanks to the YWCA of Central Virginia and the YWCA of South Hampton Roads who took on this request and moved into action by providing an opportunity for all to read the 1619 Project book and providing participants the platform to continue the discussion with others. Both branches of the YWCA held their initial book talk in August in a virtual format.

The University of Lynchburg has now partnered with the YWCA of Central Virginia to offer this book club opportunity to all participants in person on our campus.

Even though you may have missed the first book club meeting, where they read and discussed Chapters 1-3, there are still several book club discussions ahead of us.

If you would like to join in and read 1619 Project, participate in-depth conversations with others, and contribute to discussions that will lead to community action, please join us for our in-person book club discussions beginning Thursday, Sept. 1.
