The engagement plan gives you a comprehensive road map for engagement and success in your second year at the University of Lynchburg. It defines goals for students and includes ways to achieve those goals. It’s a 12-month calendar of activities, actions, and deadlines to keep you on track, and guidelines for working in partnership with your personal Lynchburg success team.
Summer 2020
June/July
- Choose summer jobs and/or volunteer service activities that will allow you to develop skills and add to your résumé.
- Devote time to reading books, articles, etc., relating to your major or your career and life goals.
- List your goals for the upcoming academic year and review them often.
- Stay in touch with next year’s roommate.
- Complete an online student employment application.
Fall Semester 2020
August
- First day of classes: August 20
- Attend at least one Second-Year Hornet Day activity during Hornet Days, August 17-19.
- Review your academic information to make sure your major/minor/advisor are listed correctly. Make any necessary changes.
- Check the resources on Hornet HQ and plan to utilize them.
- Plan a meeting with your academic advisor as soon as you return to campus to discuss short-term and long-term goals.
- Discuss expectations with your roommate and create a roommate contract.
- Tuition due: August 1
September
- Choose and focus on a select number of co-curricular activities which will enhance your long-term goals.
- Meet with professors in your major classes and ask them how former students achieved academic success.
- To excel academically, utilize all available free learning resources.
- SGA Leadership Invite Dinner
- Attend fraternity/sorority recruitment event.
- Parents and Family Weekend: September 18-20
October
- Develop a plan to prepare for successful midterm exams and assignments.
- Develop a professional-quality resume and review it with your advisor.
- Create business or networking cards to take to alumni panels and receptions at Homecoming.
- Introduce yourself to at least one alumni panel member and exchange business cards and contact information.
- Attend Hornet-2-Hornet, College-2-Career alumni panels and receptions.
- Fall Break: October 8-11
- Homecoming Weekend: October 18-20
- End of 10-week withdrawal period: October 30
November/December
- Meet with your advisor to make changes or adjustments to your spring schedule.
- Consider how you will use winter break for academic, personal, and career-focused development.
- Attend Finals Blowout.
- Attend Midnight Breakfast.
- Thanksgiving Break: November 21-29

J-Term 2020-2021
December 14 - January 22
- Consider applying for a campus leadership position.
- Share your achievements and discuss your goals and plans with family and friends.
- If you are considering a career that requires graduate or professional school, research admissions and program requirements.
- Continue to stay in touch with the alumni panel member you met in October, asking for advice for both University of Lynchburg and career success.
Spring Semester 2021
January
- Attend the Emerging Leader Retreat, held (tentatively) January 22-24.
- First day of classes: January 20
- Make sure that your program (major/minor) and advisor information are entered correctly on your academic record and change them, if needed.
- Review your Graduation Progress Report.
- Meet with your advisor to discuss your long-term plans and adjust your schedule, if necessary, based on advisor input.
February
- Explore study abroad opportunities for this summer and next fall.
- Explore your academic school or major websites to make sure you are taking advantage of the opportunities offered.
- Attend at least one Pro+ workshop.
- Explore online career resources, like HornetLink.
March
- Meet with your advisor to plan your junior year schedule using your Graduation Progress Report as a guide.
- Narrow down internship and study abroad opportunities for this summer and/or next year.
- Create a professional profile on LinkedIn.
- Midterm Vacation: March 13-21
April
- Meet with each of your professors to assess your progress as a basis for developing a plan to end the semester strong.
- Refine and finalize your plans for summer to include experiences that will further develop the skills and abilities you will use after graduation.
- Review the list of goals you wrote for yourself last summer. Did you achieve them?
- Attend Red Letter Day presentations and events on April 9.
- Academic Awards Banquet: April 9
May
- Once you receive your final grades, check your Graduation Progress Report to make sure you are still on track.
- Send thank you notes to faculty, staff, family, and friends who helped you this year.
- Last day of exam period: May 18
