Student Spotlight
Alyson Black ’16 was named University of Lynchburg’s 2015 Richard Clarke Sommerville Scholar. This prestigious academic award is presented annually to a senior who exhibits the qualities of Dr. Sommerville: academic achievement, broad intellectual curiosity, and contributions to the LC community.
Alyson is a double major in chemistry and biomedical sciences, boasting a 4.0 GPA in both majors. She is a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Iota Sigma Pi, and Pi Mu Epsilon Honor Societies. In addition, she has served as the PASS leader for organic chemistry for the past three years. Alyson was also awarded the best poster award at the 2014-15 Student Scholar Showcase for her work studying the effect of surface topography on nitric oxide production of macrophages.
Alyson is very active in the Chemistry Department and has been instrumental in creating a fun environment for learning about the science. Alyson has been the major driving force behind our departmental mascot, Gilbert Prickles, and is the reason Dr. Blair wears bow ties. Read more.
