Membership
The IRB (also referred to as ‘the Board’) consists of at least seven faculty who have current experience in scientific research. Pursuant with federal regulations: At least one of the members of the Board must be a community member who is not affiliated with the University and who is not part of the immediate family of a person who is affiliated with the University; and at least one of the members must be someone whose primary teaching and research are in nonscientific areas (as defined by OHRP). Membership reflects federal regulations for IRB membership as further stated in 45 CFR 46.107 – IRB Membership, which suggests the following: “The IRB shall be sufficiently qualified through the experience and expertise of its members (professional competence), and the diversity of its members, including race, gender, and cultural backgrounds and sensitivity to such issues as community attitudes, to promote respect for its advice and counsel in safeguarding the rights and welfare of human subjects.” The University of Lynchburg President appoints an IRB Director who serves as a voting member of the Board and serves as Chair of the Board. The President and Chief Academic Officer or her/his representative serve as ex-officio members of the Board.
Selection of Members
The IRB Director is responsible for making recommendations to the President for faculty and community members of the Board. The members of the Board, including the IRB Director, are appointed by the President. Interested faculty members may be recommended by the Faculty Steering Committee. The IRB Director works with the President to identify qualified faculty to appoint to the IRB.
Term of Members
Members of the Board serve three year terms. Members of the Board may serve multiple terms.
List of Members
- Dr. Lucinda Spaulding (term ends ____)
Faculty who are interested in serving on the Board should indicate interest via the Faculty Committees link on MyHive. Faculty can also contact the IRB Director at irb-hs@lynchburg.edu to express interest. The University of Lynchburg IRB is not a faculty committee and is not an entity subject to faculty governance – it is a Board whose members are appointed by the President of the University and is subject to federal, state, and institutional governance and regulations. However, the Faculty Committee link is how the Faculty Steering Committee shall make its recommendations to the IRB Director regarding membership.
Meetings
Full Board Meetings: Members of the Board are expected to attend all regularly scheduled meetings. These meetings are scheduled for once per month during the regular academic year (September – May). The meetings are held in person, but under special circumstances may be attended via teleconference or web conference if arranged with the Director at least one week prior to the meeting.
