ENGL 377P – The Greco-Roman Experience

Journey back to antiquity through this exploration of the Greco-Roman world on this winter break study abroad program to Turkey, Greece, & Cyprus! The great cities of the ancient world will be the classroom as students will address masterpieces of Greek literary art, simultaneously considering the mythology emerging from it and those elements of poetry, drama, and fiction-making that constitute genre in the Western world.
This course will require students to understand the multi-layered cultures of the eastern Mediterranean and their phenomenal influence upon subsequent developments through the region and the western world. Participants on this program will gain exposure to the Muslim faith through the mosques of Istanbul, visit some of the best-preserved Greek and Roman ruins in the world, see the plains upon which the Trojan War was theoretically fought, and explore the wondrously well-preserved Ephesus. History and literature will come alive through direct exposure to art, architectural constructs, cultural practices, natural settings, and World Heritage sites, making this a truly unique, once in a lifetime, educational experience!
