Share the feeling!
Who are we?
Wheels on the James is a Doctor of Physical Therapy student run community service group with the mission of “Sharing the Feeling” of riding a bike with as many children and adults as we can.
Wheels on the James is partnered with Reach Cycles, the official Richmond chapter of Ambucs, to provide Amtykes to children and adults in the greater Lynchburg area. Please use our Facebook page to contact us but also feel free to reach out to Reach Cycles with any questions. More information: http://www.reachcycles.org/.
Come to an event
Throughout the academic year you can find us at many local events including Touch-A-Truck, All Aboard, and Relay for Life. Come out and see us, learn more about what we do, and take an Amtryke for a spin.

Funding your Amtryke
Although we do not require families to pay for the Amtrykes, we do ask they do the best they can to raise money and make a donation. We will be happy to provide fundraising tips.
The Wheels on the James was started in April 2011 by Nancy Wellons and a board of seven other people. Nancy wanted to pass forward one of the many kindnesses shown to her son, Cpt. James Howard, army retired, who sustained a spinal cord injury from a diving accident at age 28 leaving him a quadriplegic. James received a therapeutic cycle from an AMBUCS chapter in Lubbock, Texas in a bike ride sponsored for disabled veterans and others.
Wheels on the James mission is to help disabled children, teens, adults, wounded warriors, and schools with special needs students in Great Lynchburg Area of Virginia receive similar cycles. For the recipients, these donated cycles will open doors to independence, mobility, and recreational exercise.
Because of James receiving a therapeutic cycle and Lynchburg being located on the James River, our University of Lynchburg DPT Program students chose to continue with the original name Wheels on the James and joined forces with James and Reachcycles.org. AMBUCS is a national 501(c)(3)organization that shares the mission to provide cycles for the mobility challenged. Each custom designed cycle is purchased through AMBUCS.
