Medical Facilities of America is dedicated to our students’ success and wants to highlight students for their efforts! MFA selected Kevin Viken as the Student of the Month for July.
Name: Kevin Christopher Viken
Hometown: Yorktown, Virginia
Undergraduate degree and school: BS in Exercise Science from Old Dominion University
What his professors are saying about him:
“Kevin is the first Student of the Month from the 2016 DPT cohort because early on he has shown a drive to be a leader in his class. He takes the initiative to seek answers about issues he feels are critical to the success of not only himself, but also of his classmates. He truly cares about his classmates and is a fine representative of the University of Lynchburg slogan of going ‘Above and Beyond.’ I look forward to watching Kevin grow as a person, student, and future professional colleague. “ – Stephen W. Elam, PT, DPT, GCS, OCS, CLT, Assistant Professor
What sparked your interest in physical therapy?
Ever since high school I have been intrigued by the physics behind how things work. It was not until I got to college that I realized that I was interested in the mechanics of the human body. I have experience working at Riverside Health Systems working under Physical Therapists, and also the YMCA working in the fitness training area. These experiences have reinforced my interest in the physical therapy field. I have chosen to become a Physical Therapist since I strive to improve the body mechanics and quality of life for everyone I treat.
What’s the most exciting part of the DPT program?
As of right now, I would have to say the cadaver lab. The Human Gross Anatomy class is quite amazing by itself, but the cadavers amplify the program by allowing us to apply our knowledge through a hands-on approach. Also, the lab is a great chance to see how all the intricate parts of the human body are oriented and how they all work together.
What do you hope to do with your degree?
I am still unsure of where I will want to apply my Physical Therapy skills once I graduate. However, as of right now, I believe I would like to work with war veterans at a Veterans Affairs hospital. I have a real desire to work with post war victims, especially amputees to improve their mobility and activities of daily living.
What are some of your hobbies?
When I am not studying for school, I enjoy running, swimming, fishing, and any other outdoor activities.
What is your favorite quote?
“We are all apprentices in a craft where no one ever becomes a master.” – Ernest Hemingway
