Why be a Teacher-Scholar?
University of Lynchburg is elevating the teaching profession. One of the ways we’re doing this is through the Teacher-Scholar program, an honors program aimed at students who want to be not only teachers but the best teachers. The benefits of the Teacher-Scholar program are numerous, everything from extra attention from advisors and mentors to financial incentives.
Here are some the benefits of the Teacher-Scholar program:
- An advisor from the College of Education, Leadership Studies, and Counseling works with all Teacher-Scholars.
- Preference in registering for classes and student teaching placement
- During the student teaching experience, all teacher-candidates are paired with clinical faculty who have been trained in the New Teacher Center Mentor/Coaching Model. Teacher-Scholars also work with these mentors/coaches during the last field experience.
- One special colloquial course each year in conjunction with Westover Honors College, including one on creativity.
- Sophomore year dinner with area educators
- Study abroad opportunities in Chile, South Korea, and possibly other sites. Teacher-Scholar discounts are available for J-Term and summer study abroad-programs.
- The opportunity to work with faculty member(s) to implement an action research project focusing on an education topic of interest.
- The opportunity to live with a cohort of other Teacher-Scholars in the freshman dorms and, during the sophomore and junior years, in the new residence hall’s living-and-learning community.
- Financial package:
- Academic Scholarship based on high school academic achievement
- Invitational Scholarship Competition after participation a competition event
- Teacher-Scholar Award
- Tuition Assistance Grant for Virginia residents (TAG)
- A teacher-candidate who qualifies for federal teacher loan forgiveness by teaching full-time for five complete and consecutive academic years in a low-income school or educational service agency, and meet other qualifications, may be eligible for forgiveness of up to $17,500.
Criteria for selection as a freshman
- Passion and curiosity for teaching as a profession (elementary, middle or high school)
- High school GPA of 3.25
- Minimum SAT score, reading and writing, 560 (530 is the 50th percentile)
- Minimum SAT score, math, 540 (520 is the 50th percentile)
Criteria to remain in the Teacher-Scholar program
- Follow Dell Curriculum for general education courses with requirements to take:
- Course on metacognition, which is defined as an “awareness and understanding of one’s own thought processes.”
- Approved Senior Symposium diversity course
- Be formally admitted to the Teacher-Candidate Preparation program by the end of the sophomore year. The requirements for that include the following:
- Complete all prerequisite courses for admission with a GPA of 3.2 in those courses.
- Maintain an overall GPA of 3.0
- Take and meet minimum cut score for Virginia Communications and Literacy Assessment (VCLA).
- Teacher-candidates who withdraw from the Teacher-Scholar program lose Teacher-Scholar funding. They would need to reapply through admissions/financial aid for any additional assistance.
