The Center for Education and Leadership is focused on developing and sustaining a re-commitment to public education — a true commitment to the education of every child within our community. The Center will provide opportunities for University student and community engagement.
Through Lynchburg Together, a coalition formed to create a common vision for education in the city of Lynchburg, University of Lynchburg elementary teacher candidates provide professional development to reading tutors throughout the city.
The Leadership Institute for Neighborhood Engagement
The Institute seeks to both connect and equip faith- and community-based leaders with the skills, strategies, and resources to promote sustainable community restoration. While needs assessment is important, the Institute will go beyond simply identifying needs and focus on meeting needs within communities. Emphasis will be placed on identifying assets of individuals, organizations, and institutions within communities and how those assets can be leveraged to improve communities. Participants will identify and map assets within their communities to create solutions.
Learn how to go beyond seeing the needs in your community to making real progress in creating real long-term, strategic solutions to lift and empower those in need through faith-based initiatives that similarly empower congregations to do the most good.
The University of Lynchburg’s Leadership Institute for Neighborhood Engagement seeks to transform how faith leaders and faith communities interact with, assess, and meet communities in need by refocusing and realigning objectives, pulling in stakeholders, and making strategic, long-range initiatives to maximize effectiveness for the benefit.
The Institute meets Saturdays for 10 instructional sessions and an additional 2 sessions for capstone presentations.
Instructional sessions will cover:
- Leadership Fundamentals – stages of leadership, authentic and transformational leadership, and creating an individual leadership model
- Teams and Change – creating high-performing teams and how to move simple working groups to those of high performance and understanding change and how to lead it
- Professional Learning Communities and Asset-Based Community Engagement – create new groups and utilize the groups around you to leverage and connect community assets
- Systems Thinking and Family Systems Theory – learn to identify critical issue in working within these environments and identifying assets that engage individuals in these environments
- From Beloved Community to Beloved Economy and Developmental Assets/Risk and Resiliency/Traum-Informed Care and Practice – how to turn love for humanity into loving action for greater community and long-term, sustained growth and improvement for those in need of renewal
