Passport programs at Claytor Nature Center are self-guided educational adventures. These programs involve stations that are affixed to posts along the Center’s trails. These stations contain content that answers questions posed in the passport booklets. The stations are indicated on a map, and part of the adventure is navigating to each station.
Staged by Special Request
Claytor Nature Center staff stage passport programs on a rotating basis throughout the year. The schedule can be found on the programs calendar. Passport programs also can be scheduled for groups by request. Availability for group programs depends on other scheduled activities and the intended date of the program. Requests need to be made at least three weeks in advance of the program date.
Participants may sign up and pick up passports on any day a program is staged. Programs also can be completed over multiple visits, if desired.

Grab an adventure bag, and take your group on a journey around the trails. Backpack programs contain teacher instructions and materials for three to four activities designed to engage children in a variety of learning tasks around a nature-based topic. There are four backpacks for each program, and each backpack is built for teaching up to six students at a time. We recommend one leading adult per backpack and group of children.
Each activity could be shortened or stretched from 20 to 45 minutes, but if you decide to do all three activities, it’s best to plan for two full hours to accommodate travel and distraction (exploration!) time. Further customize your day by substituting or adding one of your own activities. When you’re ready to take a brain break, take some unstructured free time in Otter Space*, our fenced natural play area, and have lunch in our pavilion!
*The availability of Otter Space is dependent on other ongoing programs. Please check in advance of your intended program date, if you hope to make Otter Space a part of your day.
- $6 per backpack or $20 for all four backpacks.
- Otter Romp members are free.
To guarantee your rental request, we need a notice of at least three business days. Your backpack rental is for the entire day and can be picked up as early as 9 a.m. and returned as late as 4:30 p.m.
It is the teacher’s responsibility to make sure all materials are returned by the end of the day. Please do not remove backpacks from the property.
