During Commencement, nearby accommodations may be difficult to find. Make sure to book well in advance. Discover Lynchburg provides a comprehensive list of hotel and lodging options. You’ll also find a calendar of local events and information about historical places of interest and dining and shopping options.
Guest parking will be available in and around campus on a first-come-first-served basis. A drop-off area for accessible seating will be available until 8:45 a.m. Campus Safety and Security will be directing traffic on the morning of Commencement and guiding guests to available parking.
Accessible parking lots are located near Carnegie Hall, Hopwood Hall, and the Psychology Building, and drop off is also available at Dillard Circle. The main entrance of the College will serve as the point of entry for accessible parking and drop offs. There will be signage and security personnel available for guidance.
Once parking capacity has been reached on campus, the main entrance to the College will remain open only for accessible drop off and VIP. All other traffic will be routed to the intersection of Lakeside Drive and College Drive. Security personnel and signage will provide direction to the Hornet lot (the old Thomas Road Baptist Church lot – 701 Thomas Road).
The College makes every effort to hold Commencement outside on the Dell – rain or shine. Only severe weather (thunder, lightning, or other dangerous conditions) will bring the exercises indoors to Turner Gymnasium. Should the College implement the inclement weather plan, tickets will be required for the indoor ceremony (see Ticket information below).
The decision for the inclement weather procedures will be made by both President Garren and our Director of Campus Safety & Security by 5:30 a.m. to remain outside and on time or to move forward with either Plan A or Plan B. Be sure to check the college homepage, the Commencement web page and/or social media for these important weather announcements.
- Delay two hours for outside ceremony (begin at 11 a.m.)
- 10 a.m. – students line up (Snidow Chapel and Schewel Hall)
- Delay for inside ceremony in Turner Gymnasium (begin at 12 noon)
- Guest tickets needed — previously distributed to each graduate (see Ticket information below)
- 10:30 a.m. – Graduates to be seated with no processional
- 11 a.m. – Doors open for guests
Adequate seating on the Dell is provided for families and friends on a first-come-first served basis. Feel free to bring a bag chair or blanket in case you need it and/or want to move around on the Dell. In the event of inclement weather, Commencement may be moved indoors to Turner Gymnasium (see Inclement Weather), where indoor seating will be limited and will require tickets for admission (see Ticket information below).
Should you need accessible seating for guests with disabilities or mobility limitations, please request those in advance in a reserved seating area (see Accessibility/Disability Information).
Tickets are not required for Commencement on the Dell where seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. However, should weather force the commencement exercises indoors to Turner Gymnasium, each candidate for graduation will be provided with two tickets for indoor seating, previously distributed at the Capn’ It Off event on April 18. For those graduation candidates who did not obtain their tickets on April 18, your tickets will be available for pick up at the Hub on the first floor of Drysdale Student Center (M-F 9 a.m. until 9 p.m., Sat. or Sun. noon until 6 p.m.). DPT and PA candidates receive their tickets from those program offices.
