The University of Lynchburg art department and Daura Museum of Art will host a night of art on campus from 6-9 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 18. Admission is free and the public is invited.
The event will include an “art walk” on the Dell featuring inflatable sculptures, created by students in the Sculpture I course; a pottery wheel throwing demonstration; an activity involving long-exposure photography and sparklers; and holiday ornaments and ceramic items for sale. Ceramics sales will benefit the art department’s ceramics program.
Inside Dillard Fine Arts Center, visitors will find student artwork — paintings, drawings, photography, and graphic design — on display in the Daura Museum of Art. Visitors may also view two photography exhibits: “Battered: Donna Ferrato’s Documentation of Domestic Violence,” in the Daura Museum, and “Ground Zero,” in the Lobby Gallery.
The Daura Museum also will host an art-making activity.
Chelsea Tinklenberg, one of the faculty members organizing the event, described it as a “pop-up show” and said the plan is to have similar events on a monthly basis. “One of the goals is to showcase the variety of work our students make in our program,” Tinklenberg, assistant professor of studio art and sculpture, said.
The idea for an art walk originated with Dr. Alison Morrison-Shetlar, the University’s president. “[Her] vision was to have fresh, active engagement with our students, faculty, staff, and community around two- and three-dimensional art in buildings and in our landscape,” Tinklenberg said.
“This is a unique event, in that it engages students, faculty, and staff at the University, but also the greater Lynchburg community. We hope a lot of people come out to see some of the exciting work our students have been making this semester.”
In keeping with University policy, visitors to the Daura Museum of Art, regardless of COVID-19 vaccination status, are required to wear a mask and socially distance while in the gallery.
