Helen Wood, an accomplished singer who taught music at University of Lynchburg for 22 years, will be honored with a Virginia historic highway marker later this year.
In June, the Virginia Department of Historic Resources approved the marker, which will be dedicated near Wood’s former Fort Avenue home in a ceremony this November.
Wood taught voice in the music department at University of Lynchburg from 1941 to 1964, when she died. The recital hall in Hebb Music Center was named in her honor. In addition to teaching individual lessons, she organized a variety of performance groups. For example, an essay in “University of Lynchburg Jubilee” remembers her for starting the “Night of Opera,” an annual program that featured selections from grand opera along with a complete one-act opera.
